The adventures of twelve-year-old Jake and Jim Ugly, his father's part-mongrel, part-wolf dog, as they travel through the Old West trying to find out what really happened to Jake's actor father. The collection includes the final draft typescript, corrected typescripts (one with many dropped pages, one labeled "1st draft", another "2nd draft"), front matter, a corrected galley proof.

After working as a magician and journalist, Albert Sidney Fleischman began writing successful adult novels and screenplays before trying children's and young adult fiction. His best known character is probably the Iowa farmer, McBroom, but Fleischman received the 1987 Newbery for "The Whipping Boy," a tale of mistaken identity, adventure and friendship among boys.
